Goong Sarong (กุ้งโสร่ง)

by - July 08, 2013

Shrimp is one of my favorite foods to eat and photograph. I love their texture and color and that there are so many different ways you can cook them. Today I wrapped the shrimp with some egg noodles, then deep fry them. This recipe is called "Goong Sarong" . Goong means shrimp and Sarong  is a large tube or length of fabric, often wrapped around the waist and worn by men and women throughout Southern part of Thailand. So the name derived from the fact that the noodles were wrapped around the shrimp, just like they were wearing sarong.

These crispy shrimp have all the taste yet so easy to prepare. They can be served as a snack or main dish depending on how much are you hungry. For best taste, you can serve them with savory or sweet sauce. (I use Thai sweet chili sauce.) Try this recipe out, I guarantee everyone in your family gonna loves the golden-glory of these fried shrimp -- crispy, crunchy, yet tender and moist on the inside. Below is my Goong Sarong (Shrimp in golden threads) recipe.
Ingredients
12-15 medium size shrimp, shelled with tail intact
80 grams minced shrimp
120 grams minced pork
1 clove minced garlic
1/4 teaspoon chopped coriander roots
5 black peppercorns, ground
2 teaspoon light soy sauce
a pinch of salt
120 grams egg noodles

canola oil for deep frying
Thai sweet chili sauce for serving

Preparation
1. Mix the minced shrimp, minced pork, garlic, coriander root, black pepper, light soy sauce, salt in the mixing bowl. Knead the mixture until firm and wrap it around the shrimp.

2. Wrap each shrimp with 3-4 strands of noodles and deep fry in hot oil util noodles are golden brown.
